Representing Birmingham CC

imageWith the Lord MAYOR of Manchester, Councillor Newman, and his lovely daughter who is the Lady Mayoress for six months until her mother can replace her. We were at the Manchester School for Girls and the very prestigious and interesting Choir festival . The Judges were so kind to us, we really enjoyed ourselves and definitely want to come back next year, when it will be in Cardiff.

About douglasosborn

I was a Councillor for 18 representing Weoley Ward, including the western side of Bournville Village Trust, on Birmingham City Council. I worked for, and have overseen through planning, the improvements to Weoley Castle Square, and Northfield Town Regeneration. After going to school in Edgbaston, then college, and degree I returned to Birmingham. I worked in Sparkbrook completing a "Bessy" course as a Youth Leader for 5 years and lectured the City Careers service on the employment of disabled people. I originally trained as a Mining Engineer qualifying in 1970, specialising in Explosives and Mine Lighting, and was a member of the Institute of Minerals, Mining, and Metallurgy, and the Institution of Lighting Engineers, now Professionals for 20 years. I played Rugby for Kings Norton RFC for 5 years, sometimes in the 1st. XV. I was a member of the West Midlands Police Authority (1976-1980) and also a member of the board of Birmingham Airport (1976-1981), taking a B.Th. degree at Oxford University, and gaining a Master of Arts degree in Urban Design from Birmingham City University. This enabled me to be the Chairman of Birmingham Conservation Trust where I was able to help with the famous "Back to Backs" project, and conduct the negotiations for purchasing the "Coffin Works" with Advantage West Midlands. Therefore chosen to be Chairman of Birmingham City Planning Committee from 2008 to 2012, until the change in administration, but remained a member of the committee until this year. I served on the Police and Crime Commissioner Panel, and was a West Midlands Regional Ambulance Service Shadow board member. I was a Governor of Bournville College for 15 years, and am still one for the Victoria Federation. I served on the West Midland Combined Authority Mayoral scrutiny panel. I was appointed Birmingham's 'Heritage Champion', and am a trustee of Moseley Art School, and Chairman of Shencare Community Transport. I never claimed any expenses in the 18 years on the City Council - perhaps because the forms are too complicated.
